As independent, community-focused units, Local Housing Organizations (LHOs) operate within the framework of the Inuit Societal Values and strive to provide most of the day-to-day services associated with program delivery to individuals and families. The 25 LHOs partner with the Nunavut Housing Corporation, to deliver housing programs and manage assets.

The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) is an agency of the Government of Nunavut with a mandate to create, co-ordinate, and administer housing programs to provide fair access to a range of affordable housing options to families and individuals in Nunavut. NHC has recently launched The Nunavut 3000 Strategy, (www.igluliuqatigiingniq.ca) which is a collaboration between the government and its partners to deliver 3,000 new units across the housing continuum by 2030. 

About the Opportunity

Local Housing Organizations, in partnership with the NHC, are looking for a full-time Housing Maintainer (Journeyperson) based in Whale Cove, Nunavut.

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager/Foreperson, this role is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting residential building systems to ensure housing units are safe, functional, and reliable. You will play a key role in supporting tenant safety and system performance, with a strong focus on heating system operations and general housing maintenance.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Operating, monitoring, and maintaining residential heating systems, including oil-fired, hydronic boiler, and forced-air systems
  • Performing preventative maintenance and routine servicing on heating equipment and components
  • Diagnosing system faults and completing repairs or coordinating specialized work as required
  • Responding to heating failures and emergency callouts impacting tenant safety
  • Inspecting heating systems, boilers, venting, and safety devices to ensure compliance and performance
  • Documenting deficiencies and recommending corrective actions to improve system reliability
  • Completing general housing maintenance, including minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and building envelope repairs
  • Supporting unit turnovers and preparing housing units for occupancy
  • Diagnosing, repairing, and testing domestic and light industrial appliances
  • Completing work orders and maintaining accurate maintenance and inspection records
  • Assisting with inventory control, materials planning, and tracking of time and resources
  • Collaborating with and supporting other tradespersons, apprentices, and staff while promoting safe work practices

About You

To qualify, you will need a Journeyperson Certification as a Housing Maintainer, Housing Maintenance Serviceman, or in a recognized equivalent trade. Demonstrated experience in maintaining and troubleshooting residential heating systems will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Hands-on experience working with hydronic, oil-fired, and forced-air heating systems
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, safety standards, and preventative maintenance practices
  • Proven diagnostic and problem-solving abilities in mechanical and maintenance environments
  • Experience performing both specialized heating system work and general housing maintenance tasks
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to urgent maintenance needs
  • Experience maintaining domestic and light industrial appliances

The successful incumbent will be rewarded with a competitive annual salary ranging from $83,740 - $95,388, based on skills and experience.You will also receive a great range of employee benefits, including:
